Dialogue with nature – Japanese arts & crafts exhibition

20.02. klo 10:00 - 26.02. klo 17:00

A unique chance to dive into the art scene of the rural Japan.

The city of Yamaguchi is in the western Japan, and with its 200 000 inhabitants it is considered a small rural capital of the Yamaguchi prefecture. Yamaguchi holds an important role in the Japanese history and many historically significant buildings have remained in the city to date. The Yamaguchi area is well known for the traditional Japanese handicrafts and has an active art scene with both experienced artists as well as up-and-coming young artists and designers. In Japan Yamaguchi is especially celebrated for its delicious rice and sake wine. People across the country head for Yamaguchi’s famous hot springs when they are in need of relaxation and quietness.

The exhibition highlights the connection between art and nature. In Japan the ancient Chinese concept of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements Theory has been inherited from ancient times to the present. It is still the basis of urban development and creation. In this exhibition each artist has been positioned based on the Five Elements Theory. The carrying themes of the exhibition therefore are: Water/Stone (north), Wood/Bamboo (east), Metal (west), Fire (south) and Earth (center).

The main exhibition in Pilke and the accompanying events around Rovaniemi offer a peek into the the arts and crafts scene in todays Yamaguchi. We have brought a versatile collection of Yamaguchi based artists into Rovaniemi. We wish that you will enjoy the exhibitions and get an insight into Japanese arts, crafts and design outside the bubble of the capital area of Japan.
